Hi Dawn -

I love it when you stop by. You always add such value to the conversation. :)

To another layer to this story ... when I posted it on FB, two other career colleagues chimed in they received the same e-mail. Neither was a recruiter either.

So, in addition to a blanket me-me-me e-mail, a missed opportunity at salesmanship, let's add the mistaken belief no one (in the industry) talks to each other. He furthers damages his "brand" and his credibility by assuming we all operate in vacuums.

Just when I think I've seen it all ...

Thanks for the kind words! You're always welcome here!

Dawn, what a fascinating post. You have a real gift for taking these job seeker missteps and turning them into powerful teaching moments. Not only does this post showcase the naivete of the job seeker, it reveals the ironies in the request. When a job seeker can't see beyond his/her personal needs and wants, it's difficult to imagine how s/he could embrace the expansive expectations of any employer. Your patience and generosity come through here, especially for what appears to be a clueless job seeker. ~Dawn

This is such a valuable post Dawn, it addresses what is perhaps the most confusing and definitely the most daunting aspect of a job offer. We know that men are more likely to negotiate than women and that's one of the reasons we don't rate the salaries of our male peers... I would love to see some role play for negotiation!

Hi Carol - You are and I are going to have respectfully agree to disagree when it comes to the statement "Ideally, your resume should be one page." I outlined my reasoning behind my complete and utter disagreement with that myth in this post and expounded it on my response to Mary above. As the title of the article says: "Stop with the bad resume advice."

And that includes promoting resumes with me-centric, "I am seeking ..." type, old-fashioned objective statements. My best advice to job seekers. Vet your career professional carefully and ensure they're using current presentation techniques and methodologies. If they start talking page limits and objectives. RUN AWAY QUICKLY!! There's a LOT of very bad, out-dated resume advice purported as "cutting-edge" out there on the Interwebz. Proceed with caution.

Even if we disagree, I do appreciate you contributing to the conversation. :)

Very nice article highligting the need of resume and not the length. Ideally, your resume should be one page, because recruiters and managers have short attention spans. While everyone agrees shorter is better, it’s a fact that some of us will need longer resumes. If you’ve got a lot of varied experience or a long career, you may well need more space to tell your story.According to me, the key to writing an effective resume of any length is to choose elements carefully.

This is very special, Dawn. Not only is it a tribute to Mr. B., it's a reminder about what truly lives on after our lives are spent--all those little things that touch us and stick. All the pieces that get woven into our fiber. All the things that we too will pass along. Your dad left so many of his special things in you. Godspeed to him and god bless to you. ~Dawn

What a lovely tribute to Mr. B!

My favorite line: "He had a sly, sweet smile with “little apple cheeks” that seemed to take his normally solemn face by surprise."

Warm regards,
Jacqui
